Mary S. McCarthy, FPSA, Editor Although the closing date is several months away, this is a good time to organize your 1999 nature essays. There are two separate competitions, General Nature and Conservation, and you may enter either or both. General Nature essays must avoid showing the “hand of man,” but Conservation essays give more leeway. See the entry form, printed in this issue of the Journal, for the rules. If you enter both competitions, you must pay a separate entry fee for each.

FOR THE uninitiated, medical and health insurance is a relatively new class of insurance in Malaysia compared to motor, fire or personal accident insurance. A lot has been written about it, but there continues to be confusion over what health insurance really is.
Before reading this chapter, please see “How to Get the Most Out of this Book” on page 1. It will clarify questions you may have concerning data collection procedures, forecasting methodology, sources and references, and the Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) system. For other topics related to this chapter, see chapters 44 (Drugs), and 45 (Medical and Dental Instruments and Supplies).
Health Alliance Medical Plans last month announced its coverage of two over-the-counter drugs formerly available by prescription only: Wyeths Alavert and Procter Gambles Prilosec OTC. Health Alliance will require members who have prescription drug benefits to obtain a written prescription from their physicians for the new over-the-counter drugs in order to receive coverage. The news at Health Alliance follows Medco Health Solutions expansion of its Generics First program in June to include Wyeths analgesic Advil and allergy remedy Alavert.

Hair loss refers to the partial or total loss of hair from part of the body where normally it grows.
Hair loss is a common problem in men and women. Correct diagnosis of hair disorders is complex and requires evaluation of clinical presentation, history, physical examination, and laboratory tests. Hair loss may be categorized as hair shaft abnormalities, permanent alopecia, or nonpermanent alopecia. Nonpermanent alopecia, the most common type, includes androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium, alopecia areata, and traction alopecia. The hallmark of this group is the possibility of complete regrowth with adequate treatment. Hair loss, or alopecia, is one of the most distressing disorders for both adults and children because our society places a great emphasis on physical appearance. Women, children, and adolescents with hair loss may be especially troubled by their appearance. The importance of the patients cosmetic concerns should not be underestimated. The etiology of alopecia may be somewhat confusing, as it is associated with a wide variety of causes. Some cases are best managed with reassurance and education, whereas others require medical evaluation and therapy. In this article, the hair cycle and the common causes of hair loss are reviewed. The most common types of hair loss — androgenetic alopecia, telogen effluvium alopecia areata, and traction alopecia — along with current treatment modalities are reviewed.
Its a problem most often associated with men, but hair loss affects
30 million American women. In fact, one in four women will experience
hair loss by age 40–60 % by menopause. And until now there havent
been many options to treat hair loss for women. There are many causes of hair loss including heredity and illness and
as men and women age our bodies produce more DHT. Commonly know as
the bad testosterone, DHT in effect clogs our hair follicles causing
our hair to thin or fall out as we get older. Another cause of
thinning female hair: using harsh treatments such as tight braids,
bleaching and permanents. The effects of hair loss can be emotionally
devastating for some women, but there are ways to prevent hair loss
before it becomes a problem.

    - Dont Over style– Use blow dryer, straightening iron sparingly

Health is a measure of quality of life that is difficult to define and measure. In the 1940s, the World Health Organization (WHO) defined health as a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity. At the first International Conference on Health Promotion in Ottawa, Canada (1986), the Ottawa Charter for Health Promotion built on the WHOs concept and further defined health as a resource for everyday life. a positive concept emphasizing social and personal resources, as well as physical capabilities. Good health enables one to function independently within a changing environment.

In this prospective follow-up investigation, we examined the efficacy of a modified Politzer device in the home treatment of persistent middle ear effusion (MEE) and associated hearing loss in children who had previously participated in a similar clinical trial. Our study group was made up of 38 patients who had been either (1) untreated control participants in the previous study whose hearing in one or both ears had not returned to normal within 11 weeks of their initial audiologic pretest (former control group; n = 30), or (2) active-treatmentparticipants in the previous study whose hearing sensitivity in at least one ear had not improved to within normal limits after treatment and who elected to undergo a continuation of treatment (extended-treatment group; n = 8) . Treatment efficacy was determined by comparing differences in pre- and posttreatment air-conduction thresholds and otoscopic findings. Following treatment, the former control group experienced significant improvements in hearing sensitivity at all frequencies; at the posttreatment test, hearing sensitivity was within normal limits in 43 of 60 ears (71.7%), and normal or moderate tympanic membrane mobility was observed in 30 of 34 otoscopically examined ears (88.2%). In the extended-treatment group, hearing sensitivity returned to within normal limits in 9 of 10 impaired ears (90.0%). These findings further substantiate the efficacy of our modified Politzer device in improving middle ear function and hearing sensitivity in children with MEE, and they support the reliability of the findings reported in our previous study. These results also indicate that many patients in whom initial treatment is not successful may benefit from extended treatment. We recently reported the results of a randomized controlled clinical trial of a modified Politzer device for the home treatment of persistent middle ear effusion (MEE) and associated hearing loss. (1) Our handheld, battery-operated device emits controlled air pressure and air flow that can be adjusted in accordance with the degree of hearing loss and the patients age.

There are three tiers of investment banks operating in Arkansas. The firms that do business on a nationwide basis have a strong presence in the larger cities and towns in the state. Names such as Merrill Lynch, Smith Barney, Prudential Securities, Dean Witter and Paine Webber should be familiar to most readers. Due to their size–with thousands of brokers across the country–and their financial clout, these firms stand out in the following areas: broad product line, research on national companies, broker training, and the ability to raise large amounts of capital. If you prefer to do business with companies that are headquartered a little closer to Arkansas, you still have plenty of choices. The multi-state or regional operators have captured a significant share of the Arkansas investment market. This category is represented by names such as Morgan Keegan, A.G. Edwards, Stephens and Edward D. Jones. Being close to home affords these companies the following advantages: strong research and market making for the securities of local and regional companies, and the ability and desire to raise capital for local corporations and governments. The local operators comprise the remaining tier of investment banks. This tier is split into two groups–divisions of commercial banks and independent companies. Many of the commercial banks offer investment services as a part of their trust operations. The larger banks in the state, such as First Commercial, Worthen, Twin City, Arvest and Simmons have separate investment departments that market to institutional and individual customers. A primary benefit of working with these companies is one-stop shopping or convenience.

The Business Council of NYS has also endorsed it, despite voicing reservations about adding to NYs already high debt load. Half the funding will go to transit projects in the Metropolitan Transportation Authority region and the other half to bridges, roads, airports and other transportation facilities outside NYC.
Looking at freight transport, there was a significant increase in maritime and railway transport, while the volume of road transport remained roughly at the level from last years second quarter. After the volume of maritime transport fell by a fifth in the first quarter, it rose by 14.5% in the second quarter of 2007, year on year. The volume of transport has become more volatile in recent years, but the volume of goods carried has not contracted significantly relative to the global conjuncture witnessed in the industry in 2005. Maritime transport is one of the minor transport modes in Slovenia. Railway freight transport grew by 14.9% in the first quarter and continued to grow strongly in the second quarter. Harbour transport recorded a modest increase, while road freight transport did not increase in year-on-year terms in the second quarter, partly because of the very high volume of road transport seen in the second quarter of 2006. Data also show that the expansion in this mode of transport, boosted by the abolition of restrictions upon Slovenias accession to the EU, has moderated somewhat this year Slovenia is near the top among EU countries according to the volume of road freight transport per capita. The assessment refers to the volume of freight transport expressed in tonne kilometres, undertaken by freight vehicles registered in a given country. It measures carriage by domestic freight vehicles in the country of registration and abroad, and not the volume of transport within the territory of a given country. In 2006 by far the most per capita road shipments were performed by carriers registered in Luxembourg (18,766 tkm; see graph). Slovenian carriers (with three times lower freight transport per capita) were ranked second and performed 58.9% more transport than the average carrier in the EU. The high intensity of road freight transport in Slovenia is the result of the surging growth rates of road transport, particularly in 2004 and 2005 (27.9% and 22.5%). From the second quarter of 2004 to the second quarter of 2007, the volume of shipments carried by freight vehicles registered in Slovenia increased by 53.8%. Domestic transport rose by 23.9%, while international transport climbed by as much as 63.8%. Within international transport, the largest (3.2-fold) increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage (transport performed in another country). The well-developed shipping industry in Slovenia is attributable to Slovenias favourable position at the crossing of European corridors V and X. Transport on these corridors is increasing, and Slovenian carriers are exploiting new business opportunities. With Slovenias entry into the EU, a number of administrative barriers for carriage within the EU were removed for Slovenian carriers (especially the procurement of a limited number of licences). Slovenia also negotiated the possibility to perform cabotage in the EU-15 countries, which the Eastern European countries that joined the EU together with Slovenia will only be allowed to do after the end of a five-year period.
In the final quarter of 2007, passenger transport saw the largest increase in air transport and the largest decline in city bus transport. Within land passenger transport, the declining trend of bus transport continued. The annual decline in the number of passengers in intercity and city bus transport (-3.9% and -3.5%, respectively) was also similar to the average annual decrease in the last three years (5.9% and 3.3%, respectively). The volume of railway passenger transport in the final quarter of 2007 did not strengthen significantly year on year; the 2.4% growth recorded in 2007 was also only slightly above the three-year average (2.1%). Air transport and airport transport posted vigorous growth in the final quarter of last year (27.6% and 19.6% year on year, respectively). The increases in 2007 (13.7% and 13.3%, respectively) were also somewhat greater relative to the average annual rises in the last few years. In air transport, this also enabled an increase in aircraft fleet (lease of one and purchase of two new aircrafts) and in airport transport, the completion of the first phase of the new passenger terminal and arrival of two new airline companies, which started to fly regularly from Ljubljanas airport last year. Within freight transport, road transport has increased significantly, whereas maritime freight transport is still decreasing slightly, following the boom recorded in this branch two years before. In the final quarter last year, the volume of freight transport by rail decreased by 3.7% relative to the same quarter of 2006, whereas 2007 as a whole saw a solid 6.8% growth, which exceeded the average growth in the last three years (4.6%). Road freight transport strengthened by as much as 19.1% in the final quarter of 2007; the high 13.4% annual growth nevertheless fell short of the annual average of the last three years by almost 2.p.p. Against the background of favourable international trends, maritime freight transport increased by a respective 30.6% and 41.8% in 2004 and 2005, whereas it dropped by a respective 6.4% and 5.2% in 2006 and 2007. The fall in the volume of maritime transport in the final quarter last year (-8.7%) indicates that the slowdown continues. Harbour freight transport in the final quarter and in 2007 as a whole recorded only a slight increase, particularly compared to the high 22.5% growth in 2006 (average annual growth in the last three years totalled 9.5%). Road freight transport by domestic carriers recorded a much stronger increase than railway freight transport over the last few years, largely due to the increasing international transport (see graph). The volume of road freight transport (in tonne kilometres - tkm), which was almost as much as three times greater than railway transport in 2004, increased by 4,728 million tkm until 2007 (by 52.5%), whereas railway transport increased only by 454 million tkm (by 14.4%). In three years, road freight transport became almost four times greater than railway transport; the share of road transport within freight transport rose to 79.2%. Road transport growth strengthened particularly after Slovenias accession to the EU and mainly through increased international transport (see SEM 1/2008: 14). The largest increase was recorded in cross-trade transport and cabotage, by 2,161 million tkm (by 155.2%). International transport of goods loaded in Slovenia increased by 1,323 million tkm (by 49.4%) and international transport of goods unloaded in Slovenia by 937 million tkm (by 35.1%). National road transport in Slovenia increased by a mere 306 million tkm (by 13.5%).

hypnotherapy in berkshire

Posted by on 29 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

Hypnotherapy is the therapeutic use of hypnosis. In hypnotherapy, hypnosis is used by psychotherapists to modify a patients behavior. According to the American Association of Professional Hypnotherapists, there is a 75-90% chance of effectively changing behavior with hypnotherapy. Once the patient has seen a hypnotherapist, self-hypnosis can be learned, and is sometimes recommended as part of the treatment plan. Self-hypnosis involves a patient using relaxation techniques and specific signals to clear his mind of extraneous thoughts and sensations.

Preparation

Hypnotherapy requires only that the patient desire to change a certain type of behavior. The hypnotherapist usually prepares for the sessions by asking the subject to stare at an object, suggesting, in a soothing voice, that the eyelids are becoming heavy, that the subject relax, and that he is becoming hypnotized. Then, the hypnotherapist conveys to the subject that it will be effortless to follow the hypnotherapists suggestions

Aftercare

Coming out of the hypnotic state is as simple as entering it. Waking from the hypnotic state slowly is preferable for optimal results. After hypnosis, subjects report changes in bodily sensations and describe an awareness of having gone into an altered state of mind.

Risks

Because hypnosis can sometimes completely remove or distract people from feeling pain, it is important that a doctor, or other appropriate medical specialist, assess the underlying medical or psychological condition. This assessment is important because, when using hypnosis to reduce pain or other physical symptoms, the pain may be alerting the patient to a problem that needs some other form of medical or psychological treatment. As an example, a brain tumor might be causing chronic headaches, and require immediate treatment.

Normal results

Family doctors have begun using hypnosis to treat psychosomatic illness, control appetite, and reduce the need for medication. Because of the utility of using hypnosis to reduce the sensation of pain, it can make it possible for physicians to lower dosages of pain medication in cases of chronic illness. Because hypnosis is actually an intense state of concentration, physicians have now accepted the fact that patients can regulate their own heart rate, circulation, temperature, muscle tension, and other body functions, if necessary.

Abnormal results

Hypnotherapy requires that the patient desire to change a certain type of behavior. Success is greater the more committed the subject is to change. If the patient is reluctant, hypnotherapy may be unsuccessful.

Key Terms

Anesthesia
The absence of normal sensation, especially sensitivity to pain as induced by an anesthetic substance, or by hypnosis. May be induced for medical or surgical purposes topically, locally, regionally, or generally.
Hypnotherapist
A professional who uses hypnosis as an adjunct to other techniques in psychotherapy

Of 79 men in whom clinical and laboratory examinations revealed no organic cause for their impotence; 20 men received testosterone, 21 received trazodone, 20 underwent hypnosis and 18 served as placebo controls. They were assessed by interview 4, 6 and 8 weeks after starting treatment: the patients reports were verified by interviewing their partners. Placebo men had a 39% improvement in sexual function v. rates of improvement in the testosterone, trazodone and hypnosis groups of 60%, 67% and 80%, respectively, none of which reached significance. COMMENT: Although the improvement was not statistically significant, probably because of the small numbers of subjects involved, the differences were wide, especially in comparison to placebo. Treatment with testosterone and trazodone could be used as an adjuvant therapy in nonorganic male sexual dysfunction, and hypnosis appeared to be the most superior to placebo. A more effective treatment may be obtained by combining these therapeutic modalities. Hypnosis, as I have noted before, continues to be markedly underused, and has great potential to engage and harness the inner pharmacy within each patient.
If you are seeking relief for a medical condition, you probably want to find a health care professional-such as a physician, nurse, psychiatrist, psychologist or social worker-who is trained and experienced not only in hypnosis but also with your particular symptom or ailment. Always seek people who have had the maximum training possible in the area in which you are seeking help. Remember, it is your mind they will be working with. Finding a qualified hypnotherapist isnt that hard. Many health care professionals licensed in other fields practice hypnosis, so chances are good that your health care professional can give you a referral. Two major organizations that are recognized as having high professional standards are The American Society of Clinical Hypnosis (ASCH) and The Society of Clinical and Experimental Hypnosis (SCEH). Both can provide the names of qualified practitioners in your area:

criminal defense lawyer houston

Posted by on 29 Sep 2008 | Tagged as: Uncategorized

I used to love to go to parties. Sadly, that all changed once I became a criminal defense attorney. Below is the conversation that I have at every shindig that Ive attended over the last 10 or so years. (Invariably dollar signs flash in my new acquaintances eyes despite the fact that Im clearly wearing a suit unfit for a rack in a fancy law firm.)
The justice system is a mockery when criminal lawyers can manipulate the system, and the evidence, to get criminals exonerated. Why does the justice system allow lawyers to abet, aid and reward criminals to thwart justice? Such lawyers are guilty of despicable injustices upon humanity. The justice system rewards the lawyers for their actions in thwarting justice. Defense lawyers who commit such atrocities become co-conspirators and perpetrators of criminal injustice and must be held accountable.

Lasar v. Ford Motor Co., - F. Supp. 2d -, No. CV 99-177-M-WNM, 2003 WL 29882 (D. Mont. Jan. 2, 2003). A U.S. district court granted a mistrial and imposed sanctions against a defense attorney who used his opening statement to suggest that plaintiff might have been intoxicated at the time of his automobile accident. In his opening statement, defendants lawyer told the jury that plaintiff and friends “spent the day playing pool, visiting some local establishments,” and that plaintiff “made the decision to drive himself home.” Plaintiff moved for a mistrial, arguing that defense counsel was suggesting that plaintiffs injury was caused by alcohol use.
The Oklahoma City Council Tuesday enacted a new ordinance aimed at preventing “ambulance chasing” attorneys from soliciting business by using police accident reports. Schwartz said Tuesday the law aims to prevent attorneys from using the reports to contact potential clients. Schwartz said his own wife was in a wreck recently and within a matter of days received five solicitation letters from various attorneys. The law, at least on the state level, does not address whether the police accident reports are public records. According to Oklahoma City Municipal Counselor William West, accident reports are not public records and are handled differently from actual public records such as city council agendas, minutes and similar documents. This means that state and local authorities can exercise some measure of control over the records, such as what may or may not be done with them once the records leave city or state custody. As part of the ordinance passed Tuesday, the council also said drivers license numbers will be redacted or wiped out on the documents that are released “to offer the public some measure of protection,” according to Schwartz. “My primary goal was to protect people,” said Schwartz, who is himself an attorney. “Theres enough advertising out there.the public knows the resources that are available to find an attorney.”

Monday May 5, 2003 will go down in history as a day to remember in employment law. It was the day the long-debated amendments to the Health Safety in Employment Act finally came into effect. Why is this new legislation so important? The term “workplace stress” took on a whole new significance, with new obligations for employers, and potentially serious financial consequences for those who ignore them. Workplace stress is no longer simply a sad fact of life. It is now an officially recognised and legislated “workplace hazard”, with the amendments extending the definitions of “harm” and “hazard” to include physical and mental harm caused by work-related stress. A cursory reading of the new legislation might be enough to instantly treble employers workplace stress, but a deeper understanding goes some way to restoring mental equilibrium. The Occupational Safety and Health booklet, Healthy work, Managing Stress in the Workplace, tells employers that “there is only a requirement to manage work stressors or the individuals stressed situation where you can be reasonably expected to know about the stress. Even then the obligation is only to do what is reasonably practicable in the circumstances.”

A review of the marketing literature in both the traditional (offline) and new era (online) environments was undertaken to compare and contrast marketings role in both types of organisation. Insights derived from this review formed the basis for a series of in-depth interviews with leading marketing professionals in Ireland. The paper draws conclusions regarding the overall effect of the Internet on marketing. In particular it notes that, while marketing has evolved into an all-encompassing role in the organisation, the marketer remains the focal actor. The paper looks to a future with two distinct kinds of marketer and highlights the importance of retaining the traditional commitments of marketing practice. The Internet is a significant global medium for communications, content and commerce. It is a powerful tool for building relationships with all of a companys communication targets. It is cheap, immediate and repeatable. With appropriate technology it can be personalised and is measurable. Building one-to-one relationships with customers online provides marketers with the ability to cut through the clutter that is characteristic of traditional marketing activities such as TV/radio and newspaper advertising, PR and outdoor, ambient media.
Not a day goes by without yet another article extolling the virtues of the Internet. An estimated 30 million worldwide users to date and more logging on every day. To the small business owner, the real question is, Where does the hype end and the reality begin? Is the Internet really a viable proposition for the traditional small business, normally constrained by lack of time, staff and money? 10 questions to ask yourself The best way to determine whether or not the Internet makes sense for your business is to apply a simple “yes” or “no” answer to 10 important marketing questions: 1. Do my clients require specific product information before they can buy my product/service? 2. Do I spend a majority of my time selling the benefits of my product only to be asked, “Can you send me more information?” 3. Is my long-distance phone bill more than $100 per month? 4. Have I lost business as a result of playing phone tag with a potential customer because I was unable to “sieze the moment?” 5. Would a new employee handling sales paperwork free me to increase my companys revenues? 6. Is there an international market for my product? 7. Does my product have a story to tell? 8. Am I spending more than 20 percent of every dollar I make on marketing-related expenses? 9. Would instant customer feedback benefit my business? 10. Would the ability to capture orders 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, help my business? If you answered “yes” to just one of these questions, you should at least explore the possibilities that Internet commerce can offer. If you answered “yes” to five or more, you should dedicate some serious time and resources to finding out how the Internet actually works (and how it can work for you). If you answered “yes” to eight or more of the questions, you need a fast-track education about the Internet before your competitors claim the medium for themselves. The smart small business owner will make plans to explore the Internet, find out what the Web can deliver and then formulate a strategy to exploit it. As Jeff Vick, Marketing Specialist at Creative Video explains, “The Internet will do to business in the 21st century what the telephone did to business in the 20th century.” The Web — How does it work? According to Vick, the Internet works well as a commercial sales tool for businesses that need to exchange information in order to specify a particular products size, color, model, price, etc. Multiple orders can be booked, billed and fulfilled through a simple response mechanism included on an Internet site. Much of this information can be communicated through the Web. While it is actually only one portion of the Internet, the Web serves as an extensive reference library that can provide any level of additional information about a particular subject, issue, item or product. As in a spiders web configuration, the Web provides an ever-increasing source of interlocking information about the subject in question. Simply point and click and you can dive deeper into additional layers of information. The Web also has certain features that make it ideal for marketing. It can display pictures and massive amounts of text about your product as well as send and receive order information while at the same time generating a receipt. If your product requires a lengthy explanation in order to communicate its benefits, the Web is the place to do it. Customers and prospects can view that information at their own pace — in many instances, via sophisticated video and audio commercials. Since were talking digital information here, there is very little difference between one word and one thousand words. And if you feel that youre spending too much time processing paperwork and not enough time selling, a well-designed Web page may be one of the potential keys to your businesses future success. How important is e-mail? An important byproduct of the Internet is e-mail, or electronic mail. Once you learn to use this valuable tool, youll wonder how you ever got along without it. Forget about what time it is, or whether its “worth a call” — with e-mail, it costs no more to send a message to Sydney that it does to Syracuse (the actual cost is about $1.00 an hour). And time zones become irrelevant as well. You and the recipient can view the messages at your convenience, thereby eliminating the dreaded game of telephone tag. So get serious! How does the smart business operator approach the formidable and intimidating task of investigating the Net? First, gather your thoughts as to what you would like your Web site to accomplish. Imagine that your customer can ask you anything he/she wants to know about your company and product — anything from product price to employee birthdays — and in no particular order. Analyze each possible scenario and list all the information relevant to it. Then, and only then, begin to organize the scenarios into a flow chart. Once you have the flow chart polished, try to find flaws in it. If your customer is browsing through the pricing section of your flow chart, will he/she be more interested in going to shipping next or reading your companys mission statement? After you feel that youve developed a solid grasp of the different portions of the business that youd like to present to your clientele, you are now ready to interview potential agencies who are skilled in creating Web pages. According to Vick, there are 3 questions you should ask a potential Web page creator: 1. Have you done this before? 2. Who have you done this for? 3. May I call them? While creating some Web pages may require the skills of a computer Ph.D., most will not, and there are competent companies in most major markets capable of accomplishing the task in a cost-effective fashion. Prices for creating a simple Web site can range from a low of $2,500 to high of $20,000. In fact, some of the Fortune 500 marketers have created sophisticated and complex Web pages that can literally run into the hundreds of thousands of dollars, and in some cases, the millions. But for the average small business, the investment will probably be in the $5,000 to $10,000 range. And remember, you must keep your Web site content fresh, or your prospects will have no reason to come back. Seeing your own World Wide Web site up and running on the Internet can be a proud moment for any business owner. It also can mean the start of a whole new way of doing business. It has the potential to increase productivity by extending operating time to a full 24 hours a day. But this will only happen if your business really needs this technology and can use it effectively. Evaluate your situation honestly. If its right for you, acquire it. If its not, save the money. And if you want to see what its all about, contact a Web creator and ask to see a demonstration. One picture is really worth 1,000 words. Alf Nucifora is an Atlanta based marketing consultant. He may be contacted by e-mail zubicon

WE had intended to go into Greenwich and take part in some of the street parties running with the nearby Dome celebrations but without a ticket this was to prove fruitless. A group of us headed west from our friends house towards the bridges over the Thames where we could see the fireworks display. The internet websites had listed a string of events we wanted to get to. We headed for the embankment at around 6pm and found a restaurant for an early dinner and people were already gathering for prime position to see the fireworks. There were so many people about and lots of children in pushcairs.

The vision of Horse Sense owners Shannon and Richard Knapp began with a
desire to rescue horses in need, especially those that cant be ridden. “I
still cant believe that some people think horses are worthless unless they
function as beasts of burden,” states Knapp. The Knapps began pairing
people with horses in 2001. Shortly after, the idea of opening an Equine Assisted Psychotherapy and
Learning Center seemed like a win-win situation. “Horses that have
been abused or neglected have an incredible ability to reach out to people
with similar problems,” says Knapp, “the horses give clients the
opportunity to learn about themselves and process mental and emotional
issues without judgment.”

Seeking greater influence in presidential electoral politics, Florida is gearing up to leapfrog almost all the other states and set a Jan. 29 primary election date, with an option to go even earlier. The bill to adjust the states primary date passed the state House with an overwhelming 115-1 majority and appears likely to pass the Senate as well. Floridas GOP chairman has officially endorsed the idea, defying warnings from national GOP leaders about the loss of Florida delegates at the partys nominating convention.

Cancer is a group of many related diseases in which abnormal cells grow out of control and spread.
C ANCER The scope of the problem in the United States is large. Some 1.2 million people were diagnosed with potentially fatal cancer in the year 2000. Of these, 59 percent were expected to live for at least five years (in some, the cancer may be continuously present for more than five years) with or without evidence of cancer. People of all ages, from birth to advanced age, can manifest cancer, making it the second-leading cause of death in the United States. In children cancer is unusual, but it has consistently been the leading cause of death from disease. As mortality rates from cardiovascular disease decline, the proportion of cancer deaths increases. It is anticipated that the mortality rate from cancer will surpass that from heart disease by the year 2050. Direct and indirect financial costs of cancer in the United States for the year 2000 were $178 billion.Developing countries represented 80 percent of the worlds approximately 6 billion people in the year 2000. In these countries, cancer has grown from a minor public health issue in the early 1990s to a rapidly expanding problem by the beginning of the twenty-first century. The emergence of a middle class, with attendant changes in lifestyle, increased longevity and exposure to potential carcinogens, and expectations of improved medical delivery systems have fueled the growing impact of cancer in the third world. The financial resources and socio-medical infrastructure needed to diagnose and treat, much less screen and prevent these cancers, are lacking in the developing world.

In situations where a single parent lives with someone outside of marriage, that person may be referred to as a co parent. Co-parent is also the name given to the partner in a homosexual relationship who shares the household and parenting responsibilities with a childs legal adoptive or biological parent.

The home which was owned by the family prior to a divorce or separation is referred to as the family home in many state laws. In court settlements of divorce and child custody issues, the sale of the family home may be prohibited as long as the minor children are still living there with the custodial parent. The sale of the home may be permitted (or required to pay the noncustodial parent his or her share of its value) if the custodial parent moves or remarries, or when the children leave home to establish their own residences.

The term extended family traditionally meant the biological relatives of a nuclear family; i.e., the parents, sisters, and brothers of both members of a married couple. It was sometimes used to refer to the people living in the household beyond the parents and children. As family relationships and configurations have become more complex due to divorce and remarriage, extended family has come to refer to all the biological, adoptive, step-, and half-relatives.

Government agencies and other statistics-gathering organizations use the term head of household to refer to the person who contributes more than half of the necessary support of the family members (other than the spouse); in common usage, the head of household is the person who provides primary financial support for the family.

Hypnosis, a medium or modality through which you may become more alert to your own thoughts and feelings, can be appropriate for a number of health conditions, especially ones with emotional or psychological components. While the success rate varies, many health care professionals recommend considering hypnosis for the following: Asthma: Studies suggest that hypnosis may be one effective treatment for asthma, especially when there are emotional and psychological factors involved. Childbirth: Hypnosis can help ease the stress and pain of childbirth. The ASCH estimates that for some women, hypnosis can work as the sole analgesic for childbirth. It not only eliminates the risk posed by drugs, but it may reduce labor time by two to four hours. (It can be used in conjunction with natural childbirth approaches.)

Responding to the needs of the fire service, NFPA is considering new requirements to standardize icons on fire alarm panels, making them more firefighter-friendly. * Ann Freestone Unfortunately, fire alarm panels dont use universally, recognizable icons, so firefighters cant easily obtain the information they need. Beyond looking at a fire alarm panel to see where the fire is, the firefighter may not be able to extract any other data. But that should change if proposed requirements to provide standard fire service interface become part of NFPA 72, National FireAllarm Code. The initial proposal is due in November. The impetus for the proposed changes came from the fire service, whose members stepped forward and let us know that the panels werent particularly useful to them, according to Wayne Moore, chair of the National Fire Alarm Code Technical Correlating Committee and director of Operations for the New England office of Hughes Associates, Inc.
